The Ruins – Negros Occidental: As If From A Fairytale

???????????????????????????????

Why is it called as ‘The Ruins’? Simply because it is ruins of an old mansion.

For Love and Country

About 10 kilometers from the Bacolod-Silay International Airport, you’ll find Talisay’s most famous tourist spot – The Ruins. Located at Talisay, Negros Occidental,The Ruins is what remained of the grand mansion that Don Mariano Lacson, a Spanish-Filipino sugar baron, built in honor of his Portugese wife, Maria Braga. If India has Taj Mahal, the Philippines has The Ruins.

Aside from its grand structure, The Ruins of Hacienda Sta. Maria has a very rich and interesting colonial era history. The 903 square meter mansion was known as the biggest and grandest mansion in Negros back in the early 1900’s. However, in the early part of the second World War, the Japanese were planning to turn the mansion into their headquarters. Don Mariano found about the said plan and asked the US Armed Forces in the Far East, composed of Filipino guerillas in Negros to burn his house to keep it away from the Japanese. It took days to torch down the roof and the wooden floors of the mansion that was never rebuilt.

“It was a very good idea that they torched the mansion down… because at least, I have a job now,” our witty tour guide said.

Nowadays, the mansion has turned into the most popular tourist landmark in the heart of Negros Occidental.

???????????????????????????????The marble-like finishing of the mansion’s concrete walls is because of its egg whites and mortar mixture.

“Which specific kind of egg did they use?,” I asked. “I don’t know. What I’m sure of is those are not my eggs,” another witty statement by our tour guide.

How To Get There

From downtown Bacolod City, take a ‘Bata’ route jeepney or take a cab then, ask the driver to drop you at Bangga Rose Lawns (Memorial Park). From there, hire a tricycle to take you to The Ruins. If you are driving, find your way to ‘Bata’. From there, signs will lead you to The Ruins.
